The Honda Type-R legend began when they produced a very limited number of NSX Type-R models from 1992 to 1995 for Japan. The NSX Type-R was track oriented and, to reduce weight, lacked sound deadening, audio, electric windows and air conditioning. The first Civic Type-R was based on the EK chassis and weighed just over 1 ton and featured the legendary B16 VTEC engine. In 1999, Honda tuning company Spoon Sports designed an N1 racing version of the Type R that had the B16B engine redline increased from 8,400 rpm to 11,000 rpm!
Fast forward to 2003 and Honda produced in Swindon, the EP3 based Type-R. Featuring the K20A2 2.0 VTEC engine producing 197HP the EP3 could hit 60mph in 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 146 mph. With the oldest examples now hitting 20 years of age, the inevitable rust is starting to kill off these cars. We want to save as many as we can!
This the Right hand side of the car – the left hand side is much the same. Due to budget constraints the customer wants to tackle the job in stages. We’ll be focussing on the where the sill joins the wheel well in this post. The customer wanted the job done properly but didn’t have the budget to try and make it look exactly like the original, which takes a lot more time.
Gettting access to this point required the rear suspension trailing arm to be disconnected and moved out the way.
Hi Im looking for a rough idea of price to restore out honda civic type R 2004, the sills are rotting and have a hole in the sill, thank you Emma
HI Emma
it’s not possible to quote fixed prices or even a guide for welding work, until you at least take a close look at the car. Even then corrosion is much like an iceberg, and things usually are worse than they first seem. By all means get in touch and we can book the car in for a look at, cheers, Julian
